The APA 7th Edition Citation Guide helps students properly acknowledge the sources they use in academic writing. Citing sources allows readers to identify where information came from, supports academic credibility, and helps prevent plagiarism.

At MAI AIM Academy, students are expected to use appropriate citation practices whenever they include information, ideas, data, images, or words from another source.

An APA citation provides information about a source used in your academic work.

A citation usually includes:

APA citations appear in two places:

  1. In-text citations → Inside the paper where information is used
  2. Reference list entries → At the end of the paper with complete source details

Proper citations help students:

✓ Give credit to original authors
✓ Support arguments with reliable evidence
✓ Allow readers to find original sources
✓ Demonstrate academic integrity
✓ Avoid plagiarism

A parenthetical citation places the author and year information at the end of a sentence.

Format: (Author, Year)

Example: Artificial intelligence can improve healthcare decision-making through advanced data analysis (Smith, 2025).

A narrative citation includes the author’s name as part of the sentence.

Example: Smith (2025) explained that artificial intelligence can improve healthcare decision-making through advanced data analysis.

Example: Johnson (2026) stated that technology continues to transform education.

When a source has two authors, include both names every time.

For three or more authors, use the first author’s last name followed by et al.

A direct quotation uses the exact words from a source.

When using a direct quote, include:

Parenthetical Quote Example: “Artificial intelligence is transforming modern healthcare” (Smith, 2025, p. 15).

A block quote is used for longer quotations (40 words or more).

Rules:

Paraphrasing means explaining another person’s ideas using your own words while keeping the original meaning.

Good paraphrasing:

✓ Uses your own sentence structure
✓ Uses your own wording
✓ Includes a citation
✓ Does not copy the original sentence

When using information from multiple sources, separate citations with semicolons.

Example: (Alexander, 2025; Brown, 2026; Smith, 2026)

Organizations can be authors.

When using information from a website:

Include:

Include:

When using artificial intelligence tools, students should follow MAI AIM Academy AI Academic Guidelines.

Students should:

✓ Disclose AI use when required
✓ Verify all information
✓ Check accuracy of AI-generated content
✓ Avoid submitting AI-generated work as original work

AI tools should support learning, not replace student thinking.

Avoid these errors:

❌ Using information without a citation
❌ Missing author names
❌ Incorrect publication dates
